100 Days of Science #59-- Exploring Minerals

We bought this inexpensive mineral science kit and I just knew we had to open it and try it out; particularly since we've been studying rocks and minerals.

The kit comes with a magnifying glass, a streak plate, a nail, and 15 different mineral samples.

Each of the boys took turns studying the different minerals.

They examined them with the magnifying glass.

Tried to see if they could leave a mark using the nail or their own finger nails.

Then they ran each mineral over the streak plate to see what sort of mark (if any) it left behind.

They had a lot of fun and we learned a bit more about the Mohs hardness scale.

    1. I don't remember then from when I was a kid but I do remember smashing open rocks with hammers (or larger rocks)and inspecting the insides.
