Books My Boys Read in October

I expected the list of books my boys read to be a bit smaller this month.  We have been pretty busy and have actually taken off more days of school than I would have liked so early into our school year but they really surprised me by reading anyway.

This is the first time I can ever remember seeing Evan reading a book that he just could not put down.  He has been listening to Alec talk about the Wings of Fire books and decided he wanted to try reading them on his own.

We only had book #1 The Dragonet Prophecy in graphic novel form and he didn't want to wait for the book to come in from the library so he dove right in.  He spent two full days reading every spare moment and finished up the 200+ page graphic novel in that short of a time!!

The Dragonet Prophecy (Wings of Fire Graphic Novel #1) (Wings of Fire Graphix) by [Sutherland, Tui T.]

He is not normally a reader at all and this just made me so happy!  He really has come a long way in the last year or so with his reading skills.

Here are the rest of the books they read this month:

1.  I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906-- I forgot how much Ian enjoys this series and was pleasantly surprised when he pulled this off the shelf to read. Told from the point of view of a child experiencing the natural disaster this book is a wonderful historical fiction read.

I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 (I Survived #5) by [Tarshis, Lauren]

2.  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; Illustrated Edition-- Evan and I finally finished the second book of the Harry Potter Series.  We had shelved it for a few months because he was getting frustrated with it but he did great wrapping up the book reading a full chapter each day!

3.  Winter Turning-- Alec is still making his way through re-reading the entire Wings of Fire series.  Book 7 is all about the icewing dragons.  When Winter's sister Icicle runs away from the academy he is determined to go after her even if it means returning home and facing his family.

4.  Calendar Mysteries November Night-- When new neighbors move in and put up a fence, a tent, and get some guard dogs the kids are curious as to what is going on with their new neighbors.

Calendar Mysteries #11: November Night by [Roy, Ron]

5. Talons of Power-- In the 9th book of the Wings of Fire series a new prophecy comes to light!

Talons of Power (Wings of Fire, Book 9) by [Sutherland, Tui T.]

6.  Desmond Cole Night of the Zombie Zookeeper-- Evan read the first 6 chapters of this book on his own while I was on vacation.  I KNEW he could read it on his own and was so happy that he gave it a shot.  He just loves these easy reading chapter books and in this 4th book of the series Andres and Desmond are on a school field trip tot he zoo when they notice something not quite right about one of the zookeepers.

7.  Calendar Mysteries December Dogs-- When the kids find a lost puppy on Christmas Eve they know he was meant as a gift for someone but the tag is ripped off and missing.  Can they solve the mystery in time?

Calendar Mysteries #12: December Dog by [Roy, Ron]

8.  Seven Wonders Lost in Babylon-- With Marco missing and 6 more orbs to find hidden throughout the 7 wonders of the world, Jack and his friends have no choice but to travel on to Babylon hoping to find some clues and another orb along the way.

Seven Wonders Book 2: Lost in Babylon by [Lerangis, Peter]

9. Darkness of Dragons-- Book 10 in the series Qibli must try and defeat Darkstalker but prophecies are not easy to change...

Darkness of Dragons (Wings of Fire, Book 10) by [Sutherland, Tui T.]

10.  The Copper Gauntlet-- In the second book of the Magisterium series Callum returns to the Magisterium over summer vacation since he's not feeling safe at home only to find that the Copper Gauntlet has been stolen.  As he and his friends work to uncover what happened to it they must fight off some very dangerous foes.

The Copper Gauntlet (Magisterium #2) (Magisterium series) by [Black, Holly, Cassandra Clare]

11.  The Storm Runner -- Alec just loved this book that reminded him of Percy Jackson and the Kane Chronicles.  The Storm Runner deals with Mayan gods and Alec was thrilled to learn about more gods.

12. Gregor and the Marks of Secret-- We all listened to the 4th book in the Underland Chronicles together while driving around in the car.  In this book Gregor and his friends are trying to figure out what is happening to the mice (or nibbler) population in the Underland.

The Underland Chronicles #4: Gregor and the Marks of Secret by [Collins, Suzanne]

13. The Problem Child-- In book 3 of the Sisters Grimm series, Daphne and Sabrina try to figure out who kidnapped their parents and rescue them to bring them back home.

The Problem Child (Sisters Grimm #3) (The Sisters Grimm) by [Buckley, Michael]

14.  The Serpent's Shadow-- Alec has been listening to the entire Kane Chronicles series on CD whenever he has some free time.  He usually colors or works in an art book while listening.  In the 3rd and final book in the series Carter and Sadie must take on Apophis one more time and destroy him for good or risk Apophis plunging the entire world into total darkness.

The Kane Chronicles, Book Three: The Serpent's Shadow by [Riordan, Rick]

We've also been reading a lot of wonderful science and history picture books each morning and I promise to share that list soon.

What are some of your kids' favorite books?

  1. Scholastic books are always so good and age appropriate. Boys seem to love adventure stories, don't they? My grandsons like them and try to write their own similar stories.

    1. My boys just LOVE adventure stories! My middle son in particular loves fan fantasy adventure novels and knowing that makes it so much easier to help him find new books to devour.
