Virtual Refrigerator-- String Art Painting

I have been seeing so many videos on facebook and Pinterest and YouTube about painting with colored string pressed between two papers and the results were just amazing!  My boys and I wanted to try it out and see if it was all it was cracked up to be.

Thanks for stopping by and joining us again this week as we host another virtual refrigerator arts and crafts link up.

It was a rainy, gray day and we were looking for something fun to do so I suggested we try some string art.  I showed the boys this YouTube video and they could not wait to dive right in.

Evan went first and decided to mix acrylic paint with some glow in the dark paint to see if he could get his picture to glow when he was done.

He then put his string in the paint and used a brush to make sure all of his string was completely covered with paint.

Then he laid it out on his paper in a simple circle design; making sure not to move the string so he didn't have any unwanted painted lines.

We covered the string with a second piece of paper and then a flat piece of cardboard.  He gently pulled his string out and we then opened up the paper we loved his design.

Alec wanted to try next but we wanted to try using watercolors first.  He wet down his string using purple watercolor paint.

He laid his string out in one giant loop, piled the paper and cardboard one top, and then pulled.  He liked the look of the actual paint but thought the design needed more interest.

He took a new piece of string and used acrylic paint to get it all pink.  Then he laid the string out on his paper in a new spot.

Added his paper carefully back on top making sure to line up the design.

Piled on the cardboard and using my help held it in place while pulling out the string.

He was not happy with his results.  He had a lot of pink paint on his string and ended up with a few blobs of paint and not a pretty design. We figure he either  had to much paint or his string was to close together.

I offered to get more paper and help Alec try again but he was content with what he had after dabbing at it with a paper towel.  So I decided to give my own string art project a try.  I used three strings each soaked in a different color of watercolor paint.

I laid them out on my paper at the same time and then covered it up.

I wasn't thrilled with my results either.  I did have a hard time getting the yellow and blue strings out since they got stuck together and I think I should have taken the time to lay them out each individually.

I moved on to trying to make a rainbow flower.  I coated my string in a rainbow of watercolors then laid it out on my paper in a real simple spiral.

Perhaps my spiral was too simple though as my design, while pretty in color, does not have much of a shape.

All in all we were bolstered by Evan's success and decided we'd try again another day experimenting with different lengths of skin and different paint mediums.

Now without further ado I invite you to grab a "magnet" and link up your arts and crafts posts below and visit some other bloggers to see what they shared on their refrigerators.

Your art project doesn't need to be a stand alone post, nor does it need to be a tutorial.  We love day in the life posts or homeschooling wrap- ups that show art work too!

So what do you have to share with us?

    1. They make some really wild designs and I just love that it's free form so there is no "wrong" way or mistakes.

    1. It was a lot of fun; though I will fully admit that Alec and I were jealous over how well Evan's turned out.

  5. I think they all turned out pretty - even if not exactly as expected. The blue one looks like a bird, I think. :-)

    1. Thanks! We can't wait to try it again. It was so neat to see the reveal and know that we weren't really in charge of what it would turn out like.
