We're just about finished up with our alphabet series!  I had a hard time finding a great series for the letter y but finally settled on the "A Year"  series.

My boys have enjoyed these non-fiction books and with so many subjects to choose from there is something for everyone.

Friday Favorites-- Home Improvement Edition

We had a pretty quiet week at home.  All three boys have been fighting off summer colds (or perhaps a really bad allergy flare up?! It's hard to tell).  I didn't mind spending more time at home though as I got so much done around the house.



It was a beautiful, hot, sunny day on Friday and after a quick trip to the grocery store, I kicked myself and the younger two boys outside for the day.  Ian was at work for the whole day with his dad and grandfather and I spent much of my afternoon reading a book and relaxing by the lake. I did manage to get a bit of planting and gardening done before my mom stopped by to visit with us. Relaxing days like this are why we take a summer break from schooling.




Evan asked to go for a kayak ride on Saturday.  We spent part of our morning lazing around the lake.



My husband and I went out for a date night!  I wore my new Amazon top. We said to heck with the points and ordered whatever we wanted .  For me it was steak, stuffed shrimp and mashed pot…

Encouraging Hearts and Home -- President's Day Week

Is it awful that as a homeschooler I am generally unaware of things like Martin Luther King day and President's day?

Don't get me wrong I have taught my kids about Martin Luther King Jr and the presidents and all those other (dare I say) "little?" government holidays but I never really realize when they occur on the calendar because I just don't pay attention to them.. until we go to do something and I see kids everywhere and realize that they have no school.

We treated Monday like any other school day and even though many local schools are enjoying February vacation this week we're not.  We are so close to finishing up several of our books for the year that we just want to push on through and get our book work done so when the nice weather arrives we can spend lots of extra time outside!

Where We Stayed, Ate and Explored-- Loon Mountain Trip Part 1

My husband and I waited until the week before Memorial Day to book a little getaway for just the two of us.  We finally settled on visiting Loon Mountain and stayed at the RiverWalk.  It was an amazing hotel!  

 We booked a studio suite.  We had a queen bed, pullout sofa, flat screen TV, a small table  chair set and even a cute little kitchenette.



The bathroom was so clean and everything in our room looked like new!



 We had a really pretty view of the mountain too from our balcony (even if we were overlooking the parking lot).


Not knowing how the weather would be, we picked this resort because of all its' amenities: a heated pool and hot tub, exercise room, arcade, on- site restaurant, spa.. the list goes on and on.  We even learned that you can ask at the front desk for games and sporting equipment!  They had two and three bedroom suites too that would have been perfect for the whole family.

6th Grade Curriculum

I just can not believe my youngest is going into 6th grade!  Now that we are firmly in the trenches of middle school we rely quite a bit more on traditional schoolwork during our traditional school year.  I have the boys help in planning and we select books together that we think will be a good fit.



Here are our selections for the coming school year:

Spelling/Grammar/ Language Arts/ writing:  He picked outthis cursive joke book to continue practicing his cursive.



We'll be using All About Spelling Grades 4& 5







He enjoyed Write Shop Juniorso much this past year that we'll go onto book F.


We picked out Grammar and Punctuation Grade 6 for review of English grammar.  

Math: We just started using the Key to Series last year with Evan and he really liked them so we'll finish up the Key to Measurement and add in Decimals and possibly even Percents depending on time.
