Weekly Wrap- Up: The Week We Decided to Embrace Hygge

This has been quite a stressful week.  For some reason I'm just not much in the holiday mood this year and am feeling quite frazzled that I still have so much to do and yet we're hardly ever home!  I'm overtired, over worked, and over scheduled.  The boys and I talked a lot this week about how we want to handle all our commitments and our schedule going forward with our school year and we've all decided to scale back on our activities to have more time at home.  We were introduced to the Danish concept of Hygge on Friday and have decided to embrace it as fully as possible; for now that means reading about it and taking a concerted effort to start saying no.

Friday the boys managed to get their schoolwork done early; they each worked on math, reading, and writing.  Evan was thrilled to move onto the 4 times tables and we read a few more chapters in our family read alouds.  Once school was done Alec headed off to his room to color while listening to Percy Jackson book on CD and Evan went to play with his Lego sets.  Ian headed outside to dig in the dirt and I settled down on the couch to read my own book.  They worked together to make lunches and asked if they could watch Tanked during lunch.  I was still engrossed in my book so I didn't mind.  After lunch we played several round of Scattergories and headed out to meet up with our hiking group-- only no one else showed up!  The other moms had send messages but I didn't see them all until we were already there.  Not to be deterred we went on a little walk ourselves and were amazing at all the down trees!  I had forgotten just how bad these last few storms were that ripped through our area.

Saturday and Sunday my oldest son took off to work with his grandfather.  My middle son went to work with my husband.  On Saturday Alec helped my husband change the oil in his truck and then they planed boards.  On Sunday they had to check on my husband's hydro and they went out to breakfast.  Evan was still feeling under the weather with a cold so he spent most of the weekend playing video games and watching TV.  We ended our weekend with several family games.  We play Sorry!, Apples to Apples, Scattegories, and Beat the Parents. Ian, my mother in law, and my husband all played several rounds of ping pong too.

The boys all worked on some math, spelling, writing/cursive and reading on Monday.  They also helped clean the house a bit and Evan made a birthday card for a friend.  Ian spent most of his morning outside in the dirt with his trucks.  We headed out after lunch to the library and to our friends' house to celebrate their older son's birthday.  The kids all made ice cream sundaes and watched A Christmas Story together.  Once home Ian helped me make dinner.  We swapped chores Sunday night so everyone was learning their new jobs.

The inside say "have a happy Bird-day"

The boys worked on some cursive, spelling, geography, math and reading on Tuesday.  While Alec was at karate I managed to get most of our grocery shopping done and the boys all helped me put everything away.  It was raining out and we spent a quiet day at home.  Ian worked out in the shed modifying one of his toy tractors adding some counterweight to the front of it so it wouldn't keep tipping up.  Evan asked me to play Harry Potter Scene It? with him and he was thrilled to win.  I worked on a few Christmas crafts and helped the boys pick out gifts on-line for one another while sticking to their budget.

We had another quiet day at home on Wednesday.  The boys worked on some math, reading, spelling, and grammar and then they all headed outside to play.  We had a few errands to run after lunch and they ended up taking much longer than I would have liked.  Even thought he weather was beautiful I backed out of our hiking group knowing I did not have the energy to walk much. I spent the whole day in a zombie- like state craving a good night of sleep that I just haven't gotten in awhile.

The weather was beautiful again on Thursday and the boys spent quite a bit of time outside.  Ian has been adding on to his quarry and Alec spent a good portion of the afternoon practicing with our bows and arrows; he was so happy that he hit the target twice!  Evan, Ian and I went for a little walk around the neighborhood and I just had to snap a picture of Evan walking in the woods with his pj's and Nerf gun. Evan was hard at work most of the afternoon trying to build a lighthouse in Minecraft.  He was so proud of how it turned out!

    1. We joke that pajamas are our school uniform. They ask me just about everyday if we're going anywhere or if they can just change into clean pj's. Thanks so much for stopping by and for you encouraging words.

  4. If they aren't wearing pajamas, my boys are wearing athletic pants/shorts as the next best thing! "Good clothes" are for co-op and church only if they had their way! (And my oldest has gym, so he still usually wears athletic pants.)

    1. Yep, mine too! Though this year my oldest has started wearing jeans instead of athletic pants. Funerals and other church type activities are the only times I can get them into "good clothes" as well.
