50 Things to do This Spring and Summer With Middle School Kids

Each year around this time I try to come up with a list of activities, field trips, recipes and fun stuff that we'd like to try out while the weather is nice and we have a lighter school load.  Over the years as my boys have grown we have tried to include new things for them to see and do.

I love that my boys are older now and happily help contribute!

Here are 50 things that we came up with that we'd like to try over the next few months:



1.  Tour a Newport Mansion

2.  Revisit the Beavertail lighthouse on a day when the aquarium there is open

3. Visit the Botanical Gardens (A trip we just took last week!)



4.  Play cornhole

5.  Visit Water Wizz water park

6.  Check out an escape room

7.  Visit Lake Compounce amusement park

8.  Go back to Overlook Farm (and learn about Heifer International)

9.  Hike through Garden in the Woods

10.  Go kayaking



11.  Go to the beach

12.  Go back to the Pequot museum

13. Make own our pita/flat bread

14.  See Guardians of the Galaxy 2

15.  Tour the Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory

16.  Make our own fairy house for the garden

17. Plant our garden/ pots of flowers



18.  Make paint filled water balloons and "paint" on canvas by throwing them

19.  Go for bike rides; preferably near the ocean

20.  Go strawberry picking and try out some new recipes with the fresh strawberries

21.  Make our own color changing shirts

22.  Make homemade ice cream

23. Make mosaic garden stones

24.  Go hiking and on plenty of nature walks



25.  Go paint balling

26.  Try out the new laser tag arena

27.  Make a s'mores solar oven

28.  Paint some emoji magnets

29.  Make bookmarks and sign up for a few summer reading programs

30.  Make sun catchers using melted beads and muffin tins

31.  Go to the zoo



32. Make bath bombs

33.  Decorate a picture frame using washi tape

34.  Ride a go- kart

35.  Watch fireworks

36.  Go screen- free for 24 hours

37.  Host a minute to win it day with our friends

38.  Go indoor rock climbing



39.  Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt with cameras

40.  Make an edible map of a continent

41.  Go miniature golfing

42.  Make drip painted mason jars

43.  Walk the freedom trail & go on a duck tour of Boston

44. Make homemade pretzels

45.  Try out one or two of these nature crafts 

46. Go on a picnic


47.  Make brownie waffles and have an ice cream sundae for dinner

48.  Feed the ducks

49.  Try pendulum paintings

50.  Make pizza on the grill

  1. I love your list. I need to think about my own. Our summers are really taken over by dance intensives and theater camps these days. However, I still need a list for the down times. My oldest spent a weekend at Heifer International global village in Arkansas. It was life changing for him.

    1. I just love the global village; last time we went to the farm they put in a video for us to learn even more about their program and organization and to hear from a few of the families how it helped them. It was amazing but none of my boys really remember that so I know it's time to go back.
