Art Project #84: Drawing En Plein Air

I had no plans for art this week but was struck by how beautiful our weather has been lately.  I asked the boys if they'd like to try bringing our art supplies outside and just painting/ drawing whatever we saw that interested us.... just like the great artists Monet and Renoir.

They agreed and so we armed ourselves with paper, colored pencils, drawing pencils, watercolors, a cup of water, brushes, and some clipboards.

It was the perfect way to carry our 100 days of Art Challenge into spring!

The boys soon settled themselves down and got to work.

Alec chose to draw and paint our shed and part of the garden.

I chose to focus on our large rock and the blooming forsythia.

Evan built a simple sandcastle and drew what he had made.

We eventually headed inside as the wind picked up but Alec would keep going over to window and looking at his scene.

Both boys used a bit of artistic licence and edited out objects from their pictures that they didn't like or didn't want.  I assured them, that as artists they are allowed to do that.  Art is never wrong; it's personal.

Besides, they just loved their final pictures and were so proud of how hard they had worked.

  1. So much fun! I absolutely love the spontaneity that unschooled allows parents and kids. I think we might need to try this since we live in the woods...lots of inspiration lol.
